Honest about the challenges. Focused on the solutions.
The issues facing East Birmingham — and a constructive view on what we can do about them.
Realism is the beginning of progress.
East Birmingham faces real challenges. Pretending otherwise is not loyalty to our communities — it is a disservice to them. Children growing up in overcrowded housing, young people without routes into work, families squeezed by the cost of living, and a life-expectancy gap with the wealthier parts of our city deserve to be named, not glossed over.
But naming a challenge is not the same as accepting it. Every issue on this page comes paired with an opportunity, and a practical view of what residents, councils and partners can do together. The work of community leadership is to refuse both denial and despair — and to organise.
“Communities don't need permission to solve their own problems. They need honesty, partnership and a fair share of investment.”
Eight challenges, eight opportunities.
Each of these issues is shaped by national policy and local circumstance. The work of community leadership is to name them honestly and push, relentlessly, for the solutions our communities deserve.
Youth Opportunities
Every young person in East Birmingham deserves a fair start, a clear pathway and an adult who believes in them.

Name it honestly
No spin, no euphemisms. Communities can only solve problems they are willing to talk about openly.
Listen locally
The people closest to the issue understand it best. Solutions start at street level, not in Whitehall.
Organise relentlessly
Petitions, meetings, partnerships and persistent representation — pressure that does not let up.
Hold power to account
Councils, MPs, institutions and ourselves. Honest accountability is not hostile — it is healthy.
We can be honest and hopeful at the same time.
East Birmingham has been talked down to for too long — and sometimes talked down by people who should know better. Our communities are not problems to be managed. They are places of contribution, enterprise and heart. The challenges below are real, and so is our capacity to meet them.
